Tuning a piano on the Riviera

I tune upright and grand pianos in Vevey, Montreux, La Tour-de-Peilz, Blonay and Saint-Légier, and further up the valley in Aigle, Ollon and Bex. The visit takes place at your home, and a tuning usually lasts one to two hours depending on the condition of the instrument. Travel is included in the price, as everywhere in the five cantons I serve.

Each string is brought to pitch, the unisons are balanced, and the stability of the tuning is checked before I leave. The reference is 440 Hz unless you ask for something else.

By the lake

The shore between Vevey and Montreux has a mild and fairly stable climate, which suits pianos well. The usual risks are a window in full sun and a radiator too close to the instrument. Keep the piano away from both, and it will hold its tuning from one year to the next.

Chalets in Villars, Leysin and Les Diablerets

In the mountains the air is drier and the temperature changes quickly. A chalet heated only at weekends is the hardest situation for a piano: the humidity swings, and the tuning does not hold for a whole season.

Book the tuning after about a week of continuous heating; a piano tuned in a cold chalet goes out of tune as soon as it warms up. Keep the humidity between 40 % and 60 %, with a hygrometer near the instrument: a humidifier or a humidity control system is often a better investment than an extra tuning. Hotels, schools and events

For a hotel lounge, a school or a hall, the piano can be tuned on the day of the event, by appointment made in advance. I recommend tuning after the room has been set up and before the audience arrives. Schools and families with several pianos can have them all tuned on the same visit; please tell me how many instruments there are when you book.

Regulation, voicing and repair

When the touch becomes uneven, a key stays down or a pedal squeaks, the action needs regulation. When the sound has become hard or harsh, the hammer felts need voicing. Small repairs are done at your home; restringing, soundboard and bridge work are carried out at my workshop, with transport organised and carried out by me, on quote. Every quote follows an inspection at your home.
