Piano tuner and technician in Nyon and Coppet

Tuning, regulation and repair of upright and grand pianos at your home in Nyon, Coppet and along La Côte, with my workshop just above Nyon.

New soundboard and freshly shaped bridge in my workshop

Between Geneva and Lausanne

La Côte runs along the lake from Coppet to Rolle and beyond, with Nyon at its centre. My workshop is in Le Vaud, on the hills above Nyon: about ten minutes from the town, twenty from Rolle and twenty-five from Morges. This is the area I serve most often, and a slot on the same day is sometimes possible.

I tune upright and grand pianos in Nyon, Coppet, Gland, Rolle, Prangins, Founex, Commugny, Mies, Tannay, Céligny and Crans-près-Céligny, and in the villages above them. Travel is included in the price, as everywhere in the five cantons I serve.

Homes of La Côte

The area combines old winegrowers' houses with thick walls and stable humidity, and recent, very well insulated houses where the air becomes dry as soon as the heating starts. The two situations call for different attention.

In an old house the piano moves slowly and the tuning lasts from one year to the next. In a new house with underfloor heating or a heat pump, indoor humidity can fall below 30 % in January: the wood shrinks and the pitch drops. In that case a humidifier is a better investment than an extra tuning. Read my advice on humidity and heating (in French).

Holiday homes and second homes

Many houses between Coppet and Rolle are used only part of the year and heated from time to time. That is hard on a piano. The humidity swings, and the tuning does not hold for a whole season. My advice is to keep the temperature as steady as possible, use a hygrometer near the instrument, and tune after a few days of steady heating rather than in a cold house.

If you leave a piano for several months, tell me when you come back. I will check the condition of the instrument before tuning, and explain what is worth doing.

Pianos that have arrived from abroad

Many residents of the area have lived in several countries, and their pianos have travelled with them. After a move, wait one to two months before the first tuning, so the piano can adapt to its new room. I can then tune to 440 Hz, or to 442 Hz if you play with an ensemble. My guide to moving a piano (in French) explains the sequence.

Regulation, voicing and repair

When the touch becomes uneven, a key stays down or a pedal squeaks, the action needs regulation. When the sound has become harsh, the hammer felts need voicing. Small repairs are done at your home. Larger jobs, such as restringing, soundboard and bridge work, are done at my workshop in Le Vaud, so close to Nyon that the piano can be collected, restored and brought back regulated. I organise and carry out the transport myself, on quote.

Before buying a second-hand piano found online, an hour of inspection can save several thousand francs. Read what to check when buying a used piano (in French).
